Lightfoot Historic Remodel with Light Straw Clay Addition
Dating back to the 1780s, the Donaciano Vigil House located at 518 Alto street has special historic value. The
territorial style building sits on the State and National Registers of Historic and Cultural Places. The building has an interesting story of ownership and incarnate history, from Donaciano Vigil, the second governor of New Mexico and architect William Lumpkin who appropriated and added materials from other Santa Fe buildings in his exploration with adobe architecture, to writer Charlette White and artist Boris Gilbertson who operated it as a living museum. Its latest rendition as a private residence was realized by a complete restoration and remodel merging modern design and features such as a light straw clay addition, in-floor radiant heat, a state of the art Rumford fireplace, modern kitchen and bathrooms, a photovoltaic solar system on the roof complimented by traditional earthen stucco brick parapet, hand hewn reclaimed beams, re-purposed woodwork, and restored windows and doors, creating an efficient and stylistic home that also honors its history.
The house remodel was a collaborative effort between Lightfoot and the owner, Chris Watson, who brought innovative design ideas to Lightfoot, transforming them into a stunning reality.
