Lightfoot Super-Natural EcoNest® Home.

Designed by Baker-Laporte and Associates/ EcoNest Design

Built & specified by the Lightfoot inc.

The home was built with the intention to create a “super-natural home” that used an absolute minimum of concrete and foam to create the ultimate High performance Natural home.  A stock plan was purchased from EcoNest® Design and then built with a Rubble Trench foundation, Timber Frame and Straw Clay walls. The ceilings were insulated with Cellulous to R90 and the energy detailing was done with great care to ensure a tight building envelope. The floors are brick on sand and earth, over pumice.  Interior partition walls are unfired clay brick and the interior plasters, as well as exterior stucco, are all natural clay-sand earthen mixes. The home is heated with a masonry heater, with ½ to ¾ of a cord of wood per year, and its passive solar design features. We have yet to use the supplemental radiant heat in 89% of the house; radiant heat comes on in the bathrooms for 2 to 4 months in the earnings with the thermostat at 68˚ in the winter. The heating bills are roughly $25 per month. It’s kept cool in the summer with passive air-flow strategies.

Scott Cherry and his family reside in this home and are constantly testing the efficiency and durability of its design and natural construction.
